Seawall cap

The concrete beam poured along the top of a seawall. It ties the panels or sheet piles together, spreads load along the wall, and is what most people mean by the top of the wall, so on most walls it is the cap elevation that gets checked against a height rule. Caps are often where damage shows first: cracks, spalling, and rust staining where the reinforcing steel inside has started to corrode. Raising a wall to a new required height is often done by rebuilding the cap higher, if the wall below can carry it, which is an engineer's call. Some cities regulate the cap itself. Deerfield Beach sets a minimum and maximum cap width, and Pompano Beach limits how far a cap may project seaward.
