Riprap

Loose rock placed at the base of a seawall on the water side. It breaks up wave energy, protects the toe of the wall from being scoured out, and gives marine life somewhere to settle. Some cities require it. Pompano Beach requires natural lime rock riprap, or other approved habitat enhancement, at the waterward face, and Deerfield Beach requires natural limerock riprap or approved habitat enhancement there, with rules on how it is placed. Moving or replacing riprap during a seawall job is often the owner's cost rather than the contractor's, so check whether each quote includes it.
