NOAA describes a king tide as a non-scientific term people often use for exceptionally high tides. They come when the Moon is new or full and also at its closest point to the Earth. For a waterfront owner, a king tide is the day a wall's height is tested without a storm: water over the cap, through gaps between panels, or up behind the wall. Photograph the water level against your cap, with the date and time, from the same spot each time. Those photographs are useful evidence for a permit application, an insurance conversation or a letter to a neighbour.
