Accessibility Statement

The standard we build to, where we currently fall short, and how to tell us about a barrier.

Last updated 2026-10-02 · Version 2026-10-02

Our commitment

This site is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and we intend it to be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification or voice control.

We also recognise our obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. We are a consumer-facing service and our audience includes a lot of older property owners. Accessibility here is not a formality.

What we have built

  • Every control is operable by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator
  • Colour contrast meets AA on body text and interface elements
  • Meaningful images have text alternatives
  • Every form field has a real, associated label
  • Headings are properly structured, so a screen reader can navigate by them
  • The layout reflows at 400% zoom and on a phone with no horizontal scrolling
  • Colour is never the only way information is conveyed — our condition bands carry a label, not just a colour
  • Tables have proper headers, so rule data can be read in a logical order

Where we currently fall short

Stated honestly, because a statement that claims everything is perfect is not worth reading:

  • Our PDFs are the weakest part. The guides and city sheets are generated documents and are not yet fully tagged for screen readers. We are working on it. In the meantime, every figure in every PDF also exists as an HTML page on this site, which is accessible — and if you want any guide in a different format, ask and we will send it
  • Charts on the cost page convey information visually. The underlying figures are given in text next to each one, but the visual comparison itself is not available to a screen reader
  • We have tested with keyboard navigation and screen readers, but not with a professional accessibility audit. We have not been independently assessed

Alternative formats

If anything here is hard to use, we will give you the information another way — by email as plain text, as a large-print document, or by reading it to you over the phone. There is no charge and you do not have to explain why.

Tell us

If you hit a barrier, please tell us. Include the page address and what happened — "the form would not submit with a keyboard", "the contrast on the table is too low", whatever it was.

We will acknowledge within two business days and tell you what we are going to do and roughly when.

If we cannot fix it quickly, we will give you the information another way in the meantime. You should not have to wait for our backlog to get an answer about your own seawall.

Every agreement and policy

All of them, in plain language.
